You return to your caravan in spring, switch on the 12V system and find the battery almost completely flat. Worse still, charging it does not bring it back to its previous performance.
A leisure battery that sits discharged for several months can suffer permanent damage. Replacing one is an avoidable cost, and a little preparation usually prevents it.
Good caravan battery winter storage is mainly about keeping the battery charged and controlling anything that drains it. You also need to think about storage temperature, security systems and how you will recharge it.

Why do leisure batteries fail over winter?
Your leisure battery can lose charge even when the caravan appears completely switched off.
One reason is parasitic drain. Alarms, trackers, radios and control systems can continue drawing a small amount of current. Some detectors and other electrical equipment may also remain active.
That drain may look insignificant over a day. Leave the caravan untouched for several weeks and it becomes much more important.
The battery will also self-discharge while sitting unused. The exact rate depends on the battery type, age, condition and storage temperature.
Lead-acid batteries face another problem called sulphation. Lead sulphate crystals develop on the battery plates when the battery remains discharged. If it stays that way for long enough, the process can cause permanent capacity loss.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club warns that a battery left discharged can become sulphated and may eventually become unusable. It recommends storing batteries fully charged.
Cold weather adds another challenge. A fully charged lead-acid battery withstands freezing conditions much better than a discharged battery.

Should you disconnect your caravan battery over winter?
Disconnecting your caravan battery can help prevent parasitic drain, but it is not always the right choice.
Removing the electrical connection stops equipment from gradually taking power from the battery. That makes disconnection useful when the caravan will sit unused for several months.
However, disconnecting the battery does not stop self-discharge. You still need to check and recharge it during storage.
There is also an important security issue.
Your caravan may have:
- An alarm
- A tracking system
- A security control unit
- Other equipment that needs permanent 12V power
Disconnecting the battery could disable these systems. It could also conflict with your insurance requirements.

If you do disconnect the battery terminals, disconnect the negative terminal first. When reconnecting it later, connect the positive terminal first.
Some caravans also have a battery isolation switch. Its function varies between models, so check your handbook before relying on it to isolate every electrical load.
The right choice depends on your caravan, security equipment and storage setup.
Should you remove the battery from the caravan?
Removing the battery is useful when you cannot charge it at your storage site.
For example, you may keep your caravan in a secure compound without electric hook-up. Taking the battery home makes regular charging much easier.
Removal is less necessary if suitable mains power is available and you can maintain the battery safely in the caravan.
If you take the battery out, keep it:
- Upright
- Somewhere cool and dry
- Protected from frost
- Away from children and pets
- With clean, protected terminals
- Somewhere with suitable ventilation
Avoid leaving it directly on a very cold floor. A solid shelf or board is a better option.
Ventilation is especially important when charging some lead-acid batteries. Charging can release gas, so never charge one inside an enclosed cupboard or other sealed space.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club recommends removing a battery during longer periods of storage when appropriate. It advises keeping it fully charged in a cool, dry place.
If you have several batteries in a garage or workshop, label them before storage. This makes refitting the correct battery much easier in spring.
How do you keep a leisure battery charged over winter?
Start by fully charging the battery before your caravan goes into storage.
Do not deliberately store it partly discharged. Starting at full charge gives it the best chance of remaining healthy.
You then have three main options.
Recharge it periodically
You can remove the battery or return to the caravan and recharge it during winter.
Checking every four to six weeks is a cautious routine for many owners. However, battery requirements differ, so always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club advises checking a stored battery regularly and recharging when required. Its general guidance suggests checking at least every two months.
Regular visits also let you check the caravan for damp, security issues and other problems.
Use a smart maintenance charger
A compatible smart charger can make winter maintenance easier.
Rather than supplying a fixed charge continuously, a modern maintenance charger monitors the battery and adjusts its charging cycle. It can top up the battery when needed without constantly applying the same charging rate.
Check that your charger suits long-term connection before leaving it unattended. You should also follow both the charger and battery manufacturer’s instructions.
Older basic trickle chargers do not necessarily provide the same charging control.
Use solar charging
Solar can also maintain a leisure battery, particularly if your storage location has no mains electricity.
The system still needs the correct solar controller, suitable wiring and a panel that receives enough daylight.
Whichever charging method you use, make sure it matches your battery.
Lithium and lead-acid batteries use different charging profiles. Using the wrong equipment may reduce performance or damage the battery.

A simple multimeter can also be useful. Checking resting voltage gives you a rough indication of battery condition and state of charge.
Take the reading after the battery has rested away from charging or significant electrical loads. Check the battery manufacturer’s specifications when interpreting the result.
Can solar keep a caravan battery topped up in winter?
Yes, solar can maintain a caravan leisure battery during winter, but UK conditions reduce its output significantly.
Winter brings shorter days, a lower sun angle and more overcast weather. A panel that produces plenty of power in July will generate much less during December.
That does not make it useless.
During storage, your aim is usually not to run lights, pumps and appliances. You may only need enough energy to offset self-discharge and small security-system loads.
That makes solar particularly useful for caravans stored away from mains electricity.
You still need to check the system periodically.
Solar output will fall sharply if the panel becomes covered by:
- Leaves
- Heavy dirt
- Snow
- Debris
- A caravan cover
A covered panel cannot maintain the battery effectively.
The solar charge controller also needs to remain correctly connected and configured. Remember that the controller itself consumes a small amount of power.
Do not assume a solar panel makes the battery maintenance-free. Visit the caravan when possible and check that charging is actually taking place.

How does cold weather affect leisure batteries?
Cold weather reduces the amount of usable power a battery can deliver.
A battery stored outside in very low temperatures will usually perform worse than the same battery kept in a more moderate environment.

How should you check your leisure battery before spring?
Inspect and test the battery before relying on it for your first trip.
Start with a visual check.
Look for:
- Corrosion around the terminals
- Damaged cables
- Cracks in the casing
- Bulging or swelling
- Any sign of leakage
Do not try to revive a visibly swollen or leaking battery. Replace it and arrange safe disposal instead.
Clean any light corrosion and make sure the terminals and connectors remain secure.
Next, fully charge the battery and let it rest for several hours. You can then use a multimeter to take a resting voltage reading.
The exact figure you should expect depends on the battery type, so compare the reading with manufacturer guidance.
Voltage alone does not tell you everything.
A tired battery may appear fully charged without being able to deliver much usable capacity. Watch what happens when you put it under load.
Test equipment such as:
- Interior lights
- Water pump
- Caravan control panel
- Motor mover
- Alarm or tracker where appropriate
A motor mover is a good test because it draws far more current than an LED light.
If the battery voltage drops quickly or equipment performs poorly, the battery may have lost capacity during storage.

- Shorter periods between charges
- Slow motor mover operation
- Lights dimming under load

- Rapid voltage drop during use
Physical warning signs need more urgent attention.
Replace a battery if you notice swelling, leakage or abnormal heat while charging. Do not continue trying to charge a damaged battery.
Battery weaknesses often become obvious after winter storage. Regular summer use can mask declining capacity because the battery receives more frequent charging.
